Recyclability of black plastics: An overview

Black plastic has been a significant UK recycling challenge due to the use of carbon black pigments, which render it undetectable by Near-Infrared (NIR) sorting systems commonly used in recycling facilities. Traditionally coloured with carbon black pigments, black plastics evade detection and sorting, resulting in environmental harm due to landfill or incineration.

Over the last decade, WRAP has spearheaded initiatives to promote the use of NIR-detectable pigments and alternative materials, fostering innovation across the packaging sector.

This report provides an overview of the work carried out by WRAP and their partners on the recyclability of detectable black plastic and the impact this material has on the supply chain.
